WORLD-CLASS MEN’S DISCUS FIELD ASSEMBLED FOR LONDON ATHLETICS MEET
Reigning Olympic champion Daniel Ståhl (SWE) and 2022 world gold medallist Kristjan Čeh (SLO) will headline a stellar line-up of Olympic and world medallists in the men’s discus at the London Athletics Meet on Sunday 23 July.
With more than 40,000 tickets already sold for the meet, it will be the biggest athletics fixture since the World Athletics Championships London 2017.
Čeh – who threw the joint fourth furthest throw in history at a meeting in Estonia on Friday at 71.86m – has two Diamond League wins to his name so far in 2023 after victories in Doha and Rabat. This follows on from his success in the Wanda Diamond League Final in 2022. He also has experience of winning on British soil after securing victory at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last year.
Ståhl won his first Olympic gold in Tokyo two years ago and has a superb CV to his name. The 2019 world champion has won the Diamond League Final on three occasions during his career, winning twice at the London meeting in 2017 and 2019.
Among the other leading contenders in the field are Mykolas Alekna (LTU) – emerging talent in the event at just 20 years-old – who won world silver in Oregon as well as European gold in Munich last year.
2020 Olympic silver medallist Simon Petterson (SWE) joins the field, while Andrius Gudzuis (LTU) will return to the scene of his 2017 World Athletics Championships triumph.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s Lawrence Okoye – who won Commonwealth silver and European bronze last summer – will look to impress the home crowds. He will be joined by 2022 Commonwealth champion Matthew Denny (AUS) and Tokyo Olympic finalist, Sam Mattis (USA).
Čeh said, “I am very excited to be competing in London for the first time next month. I have started my season very well with wins in the Diamond League meetings in Doha and Rabat, so I want to keep my good form and momentum going throughout the summer season.
“The field is world class so it will be great preparation ahead of August’s World Athletics Championships. The Diamond League meetings provide great competition for all the discus throwers, so it will be a great contest for the British crowd to watch.”
With the majority of remaining tickets just £23 per adult and £5 per child you can still secure your place at the London Athletics Meet now!
