NEW BRITISH 100M RECORD HOLDER ZHARNEL HUGHES SET FOR LONDON ATHLETICS MEET

Following his record-breaking 100m performance in New York last weekend, Zharnel Hughes (GBR) will face the 200m at the London Athletics Meet on Sunday 23 July.

The 2022 European 200m champion revised the history books at the USATF NYC Grand Prix last week where he broke Linford Christie’s near 30-year-old record with a stunning time of 9.83 which moved him to second on the European all-time list.

The previous record had stood at 9.87 for three decades but Hughes – whose previous best was 9.91 – produced the best performance of his career so far to rewrite the history of British sprinting.

The 27-year-old achieved a Wanda Diamond League win over 200m in London back in 2015.

The two-time world relay medallist has a lifetime best of 20.02 over 200m with the British record standing at 19.87 set by John Regis in 1994.

On his return to competing at London, Hughes said, “It will be amazing to be back competing in front of all the British fans at the London Stadium this summer. And to do it as the new British 100m record holder will make it even more special. I am so happy to have broken the record last week. I had a lot of respect for the previous record, so I am very proud to have achieved that milestone.

“I will be racing over the 200m in London, a distance I have enjoyed a lot of success in during my career. I know it will be a very fast and entertaining race, so I am excited to see what I am capable of producing on the day. I want to put on a show for the 45,000 plus people in the stadium next month.”
