PREVIEW: 2023 COVENTRY SPRING MEETING
The Coventry Spring Meeting, organised by UK Athletics, will take place across the weekend of 15-16 April 2023, welcoming several Paralympic, world and European medallists to the track at the University of Warwick.
After a series of stunning world records earlier this year, Hannah Cockroft (coach: Paul Mosely, club: Leeds) [T34] will take on Kare Adenegan (Job King, Coventry) [T34] in the 100m and 400m on Saturday. Adenegan, the five-time Paralympic medallist, will also contest the 800m on Sunday.
Sammi Kinghorn (Rodger Harkins, Red Star) [T53] is another notable name to watch out for in the women’s wheelchair races and she will also race over 100m and 400m.
2019 World Para Athletics champions Kayleigh Haggo (John Owens, Red Star) and Gavin Drysdale (David Phee, Red Star) will compete in the 100m Frame Running event. Both sealed world titles – previously known as RaceRunning – in Dubai when the discipline made its maiden appearance at the Championships. World silver medallist Rafi Solaiman (Philip Fleetwood, Charnwood) will also go in the men’s race.
After posting a British T54 1500m record in Dubai earlier this year, Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins, Kirkby) will continue his preparations for this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships in Paris [8-17 July] as he goes in the 100m and 400m in Coventry. He will face multiple Paralympic medallist Brent Lakatos (CAN) in the events.
Tokyo 2020 relay silver medallist Ali Smith (Benke Blomkvist, Guilford & Godalming) [T38] goes in the ambulant 400m, while Paralympic T20 400m bronze medallist Columba Blango (Chris Zah, Shaftesbury Barnet) will race in the men’s equivalent where he will face European medallists John Bridge (Darrell Maynard, Cardiff) [T47] and Shaun Burrows (Joe McDonnell, Charnwood) [T38].
Commonwealth T47 100m champion Emmanuel Oyinbo-Coker (Joe McDonnell, Newham & Essex Beagles) will compete in the short sprints in the West Midlands, while the ambulant long jump will see world junior medallists Karim Chan (Lukasz Zawila, Charnwood) and Barney Corrall (Aston Moore, Charnwood) in action.
Three-time Paralympic champion Stephen Miller (Ros Miller, Gateshead) [F32] will compete in the men’s club throw competition, with European bronze medallist Emily Stewart (Richard Kaufman, Gateshead) [F38] lining up in both the ambulant women’s shot put and discus.
