EURO INDOOR LONG JUMP CHAMPION JAZMIN SAWYERS TARGETS LONDON LANDING

After winning a maiden European indoor title in March, Jazmin Sawyers (coach: Aston Moore, club: City of Stoke) has confirmed she will compete in the long jump at the London Stadium on Sunday 23 July as athletics returns to the capital city.

Sawyers’ success led the headlines as she won the European title two months ago, the first continental title of her career. In a highly entertaining final, she moved up to the gold medal position with a British indoor record of 7.00m in the penultimate round, leading to joyous scenes in the aftermath.

She became only the third British woman to jump over seven metres after Shara Proctor and Lorraine Ugen, and once again showed her credentials as a world-class championship performer.

The 28-year-old has won medals at the European (outdoor) championships and Commonwealth Games, as well as reaching two consecutive Olympic finals [Rio and Tokyo] during her stellar career to date. So, she will be aiming for a strong performance at the Wanda Diamond League meeting this summer ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Sawyers said, “After the highs of the indoor season, I am really looking forward to competing outdoors, and to be back in the London Stadium for this event will be amazing. I cannot wait to compete in front of the huge home crowd again.

“I have been lucky enough to compete in front of the UK crowd several times during my career, so I know the boost it gives all the athletes, particularly the British athletes. So, I look forward to seeing everyone there this summer to cheer me on at the long jump pit down the backstraight.”
