2023 IN REVIEW: MAY

World Para Athletics Grand Prix, Nottwil

Hannah Cockroft (Paul Mosely, Leeds) revised two of her world records on her tour of Switzerland as she competed in Arbon and Nottwil.

Her 200m world record set in Sharjah was lowered once again with a time of 28.90, and she backed that with a time of 28.98 in Nottwil.

She would also improve her  T34 100m record to 16.31 as she continued to take the sport to new levels.

Other notable results in Nottwil saw Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins, Kirkby) and Eden Rainbow-Cooper (Arno Mul, Red Velvet Racing Team) set British records in the T54 800m and 5000m respectively. Danny Sidbury (Christine Parsloe, Sutton & District) set the second quickest time ever recorded in the T54 5000m, while several athletes improved their PBs on the fast tracks.

 

European Race Walking Cup, Podebrady

The British duo of Bethan Davies (coach: Andi Drake, club: Cardiff) and Heather Warner (Martin Bell, Pembrokeshire) put in solid performances at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady, Czech Republic.

Davies started off her campaign early in the morning in the women’s 35km race walk and put in a season best performance as she clocked 3:00.13 for 14th position overall.

In the 20km race, Heather Warner would finish the race in 26th place overall with a time of 1:38.13.

Night of 10,000m PBs

Jessica Warner-Judd (coach: Mick Judd, coach: Blackburn Harriers) and Andrew Butchart (Central AC) were crowned UK 10,000m champions at the prestigious Night of 10,000m PBs fixture hosted by Highgate Harriers in London.

Warner-Judd surged through on the last lap to take the UK title, and place fourth overall, with Ethiopia’s Mizan Alem Adane winning in a sub 30 minute time of 29:59.03.

In the men’s Championship race, Andrew Butchart came through to take the UK title, with Zakariya Mahamed (Idris Hamud, Southampton) and Ellis Cross taking the silver and bronze medals.

Loughborough International

There were several lifetime bests for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Junior (GBJ) team at the Loughborough Athletics International including Ella Greenway (coach: Joanna Evans, club: Cleethorpes) and David Race (Kyle Bennett, Gateshead/Loughborough Students) in the 800m, as well as Lucy Fellows (Zac Harrop, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) in the long jump and Zara Obamakinwa (Mark Chapman, Blackheath & Bromley) in the discus.
