History made at The British Grand Prix of Race Walking as first Half Marathon Race Walk and National Championships held in Leeds as Corbishley sets new British Record.
History was made on Saturday when the first ever Half Marathon race walking event was staged in Great Britain at the British Grand Prix of Race Walking staged at the Brownlee Centre Leeds. The event incorporated the first ever UK Athletics and England Athletics Championships over the new international distances.
Cameron Corbishley (Medway and Maidstone, Andi Drake) just 2 weeks after finishing 32nd in the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships over the marathon distance took the inaugural UK and England Titles over the half Marathon distance to clock a new British Record of 1:30:53. In the early stages he was joined by Cumali Arslan who has recently moved to Leeds. Corbishley clocked 41.10 at the 10km point which represents an England Athletics Qualifying mark for the Commonwealth Games. Behind him Arslan clocked a personal best of 1:33:07. Emily Ghose (Tonbridge AC, Noel Cramdoy) was also a history maker in taking the first ever UK and England Athletics Half Marathon title in 2:03:58.
In the supporting 10km race, 2018 Commonwealth bronze medallist Bethan Davies (Cardiff Athletics) took the race in 49:37 ahead of Adam Cowin (50:26) and Abigail Jennings (Aldershot Farnham District, Verity Snook) in a personal best of 50.33. Timothy Perry Northern (Isle of Man) AC took the England Athletics Under 18 title over 5km in 25.57. Honey-Mae Davies (Manx Harriers) took the England Under 18 Title over 5km in anew pb of 29:29. Lilee Fletcher-Merryweather (Manx Harriers) took the England Under 16 Title over 3km in a fast 14:34.
Thanks to the support of the England Athletics Competition Grant for making the event possible.
