First medal for Novuna GB&NI on Day Three of World U20 Championships

Wyatt Larkins (Harrow AC, Jamie Bath) produced the throw of his life to clinch bronze in the men’s hammer throw (6kg) final on day three of the World Athletics U20 Championships.

The 19-year-old’s first attempt in the showpiece resulted in a personal best distance of 75.38m, good enough to keep him in the medal positions throughout the contest and secure the Novuna Great Britain & Northern Ireland team’s first medal of the competition.

“I came in ranked 12th, I got a PR, it was pretty good,” said Wyatt. “My first round was great, it was a PR, solid throw.

“All of my throws were over my previous PR, so it was a great battle. It’ll always have a place in my heart. I wasn’t even planning to go on the podium, so this is a massive bonus.

“Hopefully it’s a great sort of motivator for me and hopefully I can get some more medals in the future.”

In the men’s 3000m, Liam Conway (Cambridge & Coleridge AC, Richard Park) smashed his previous personal best by 10 seconds on the way to a heroic fourth-place finish in a time of 7:50.10.

Meanwhile, compatriot Michael Clark (City of Norwich AC, Jane Clarke), competing in the same race, came home in 13th.

Shaikira King (Wreake & Soar Valley, Jon Bigg) stormed into the final of the women’s 800m after clocking a time of 2:02.93 – the second-fastest of any athlete in the semi-finals.

In the final of the women’s 400m, Casey Musgrave (City of Sheffield and Dearne AC, Mark Fowler) finished eighth in a time of 53.07 seconds to cap a successful time in Eugene for the 19-year-old.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland was also represented in the 3000m steeplechase final by Ava James (Brighton & Hove AC, John Clements), who performed valiantly on the way to a 13th-place finish.

Daniel Emegbor (Harrow AC, Rohan Samuel) leapt into the final of the men’s long jump after conjuring up a jump of 7.59m.

Samuel Newton (Tonbridge AC, David Hull) sits 21st after five rounds of the decathlon with a total of 3767 points.

In the men’s 800m, Matthew McKenna (Walton AC, Jamie McLoughlin) and Josh Mungin (Kilbarchan AAC, John Rodger) both came within one second and one place of a place in the final, with the pair recording fourth-place finishes.

Toby Wright (Taunton AC, Ashley Bryant) and Sophie Thomas (Dunfermline Track & Field Club, Agustin Osorio) both came through their men’s 110m hurdles and women’s 200m heats respectively during the morning session.

Wright then went on to finish fifth in his semi-final with a season’s best time of 13.42 seconds while Thomas, who had earlier won her heat in a time of 23.53 seconds, also crossed the line in fifth during her semi-final.

Mayo Alabi (Birchfield Harriers, Andy Paul) and Jake Odey-Jordan (Be Fit Today Track Academy, Kevin Schnexnayder) both came through their men’s 200m heats.

The former went on to finish seventh in the semi-final while the latter opted not to race after the heats.
