British road titles crowned in the one mile and 5K this weekend

Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC, Rob Denmark) and Jack Kavanagh (Holland Sports AC, Neil Danby) claimed the UK Athletics 5K Road titles at the SportsShoes Podium Home Nations race in Cardiff, whilst Cameron Boyek (Morpeth Harries & AC) and Kate Axford (Belgrave Harries) claimed the UK Athletics One Mile Road titles in Westminster.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant delighted the home crowd by winning the women’s title at the 2026 UK Athletics 5K Road Championships in Cardiff, while Jack Kavanagh produced a late sprint to claim the men’s crown.

The championships formed part of the SportsShoes Podium Home Nations 5K in Bute Park, with warm and humid conditions greeting the athletes after rain earlier in the day.

Courtney-Bryant quickly established herself at the front of the women’s race, with European Marathon Team gold medallist Clara Evans-Graham (Pontypridd Roadents AC) and 2026 BUCS 5,000m and 10,000m champion Charlotte Dannatt (Camberley & District AC, Kyle Bennett) tracking her closely.

The three remained together through the halfway point, running shoulder-to-shoulder before Courtney-Bryant began to increase the pace as they approached the bell.

She crossed the line in 15:41 , with Dannatt second in 15:48 and Evans-Graham completing the top three in 15:53.

New Balance won the women’s team title, with the England senior team taking silver and England’s U20 team finishing third.

There was an equally dramatic finish in the men’s race, where Kavanagh produced a late surge to overturn a deficit and claim the title.

Charlie Brisley (Newham & Essex Beagles AC) initially moved to the front of a tightly packed field, with 10 athletes in the line-up boasting sub-14-minute personal bests over 5km on the road.

After the opening lap, a leading group began to form, with Kavanagh moving to the front and gradually opening a small gap as he dictated the pace.

Joseph Tuffin (Birmingham Running Athletics and Triathlon Club, Jethro Mcgraw) then moved past him with 600m to go, with Brisley close behind, and the trio pulled clear of the chasing pack.

Kavanagh refused to surrender his advantage in the championship battle, however, and found another gear with 100m remaining. He produced a powerful finishing sprint to overhaul Tuffin and cross the line first in 13:49. Tuffin took silver in 13:54, with England’s Finley Proffitt claiming bronze in 13:56.

England’s senior team won the men’s team title, with the New Balance team finishing second and England’s U20 team taking third.

UK ONE MILE CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN LONDON

Cameron Boyek and Kate Axford were crowned UK Athletics One Mile Road Champions as part of the BMC Bannister Mile at the Vitality Westminster Mile in London on Sunday.

The championship race formed the final wave of the day at the popular central London event, which attracted more than 8,000 finishers and saw athletes race around St James’s Park before finishing on The Mall.

In the men’s championship race, Boyek emerged victorious after a closely fought battle, stopping the clock at 4:02 to secure the national title. The race came down to a sprint finish, with Boyek finding an extra gear in the closing metres to move past Tom Dodd (Birchfield Harries) and take the win.

The women’s championship saw Axford deliver an outstanding performance on her debut at the event, equalling the women’s course record with a winning time of 4:23. The result earned her both the race victory and the UK Athletics One Mile Road Championship crown.

The championship races were staged within the prestigious BMC Bannister Mile, named in honour of Sir Roger Bannister, and brought together some of the fastest road milers in the country.
