Sustainability at the Novuna London Athletics Meet

The Novuna London Athletics Meet, taking place on Saturday 18 July 2026 at London Stadium, is not just about incredible sporting action—it’s a celebration of how major events can lead the way in environmental sustainability. Here’s how we’re working to reduce our footprint while raising the bar for green events:

Renewable Energy from the Roof

  • The London Stadium is now powered in part by a cutting-edge solar membrane installed on its roof. Funded by the Mayor’s Green Finance Fund, this system generates clean, renewable energy that supports large-scale events like the Novuna London Athletics Meet all while cutting carbon emissions.

Free Water Refill Stations

  • Fans are encouraged to bring reusable bottles, with free water refill points located across the stadium.
  • This initiative helps reduce single-use plastics while keeping spectators hydrated and healthy.
  • Water fountains are located across the the outer concourse of the stadium as well as in the following locations; between blocks 103 – 104 and between blocks 112 – 113. Also near; block 116, block 120, block 125, block 127, block 133, block 137, block 143, block 150, block 156, block 201 and block 215.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Recycling, compost, and general waste bins are clearly marked across the venue.
  • Food vendors are using compostable packaging and utensils to reduce landfill waste.

Low‑Carbon Travel Options

  • Public transport is the easiest, greenest way to reach the stadium and spectators are strongly encouraged to utilise the extensive public transport network. The stadium is served and accessed through multiple stations and terminals (rail, tube and bus)
  • Cycling is also encouraged, with docking stations and secure cycle parking available around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Electric Vehicles & Fleet Sustainability

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) are being used behind the scenes by event operations and logistics teams, significantly lowering emissions associated with set-up and transport.
  • Where necessary, EV charging points are also available in designated car parks for staff and suppliers.

Green Venue in a Green Park

The London Stadium and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park are designed with sustainability in mind:

  • The stadium was built using recycled materials and low-carbon construction methods.
  • The surrounding park features biodiverse habitats, green spaces, and community gardens—all open to the public.

Education & Fan Engagement

  • Sustainability initiatives will be on show at the event. Staff will also be on hand to share insights into how this event—and the stadium itself—are embracing environmentally conscious practices.

Why It Matters

Our sustainability efforts reflect a global shift in athletics and beyond—driven by the belief that sport can inspire positive change. These initiatives align with the Athletics for a Better World Standard, helping to set a benchmark for environmentally responsible events worldwide.
