ZHARNEL HUGHES ANNOUNCED AS GB & NI TEAM CAPTAIN FOR WORLD ATHLETICS RELAYS BAHAMAS 24

UK Athletics (UKA) has today announced Zharnel Hughes as Captain to the Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 this weekend.

UKA’s objective for the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 is to qualify all relay teams for the Paris Olympic Games. The championships are the culmination of a two-week relay training camp in Florida and the selected teams for each race will be announced on Saturday.

Head of Sprints, hurdles and relays Darren Campbell commented:

“I have been really pleased to see Zharnel progress over the last year becoming a global individual medallist. His conduct as an individual and a team athlete is so focused making him the ideal team captain who leads by example.”

Hughes, the UK 100m and 200m record holder said:

“When Darren spoke to me at camp and asked me, I was a bit hesitant at first but then I told myself ‘I got this!’ We are here to qualify for Paris, and I know we are going to go out there and smash it. I know if we bring our A game, are consistent with our check marks and bring it every day we can do the job out there this weekend.”

The teams will qualify for Paris by qualifying for their respective finals. Heats for all events take place on Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday night at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau.
