WORLD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR DUPLANTIS MAKES LONG-AWAITED LONDON RETURN

Swedish pole vault supremo Mondo Duplantis, the multiple Olympic, world and European champion, will return to the London Stadium for the first time since 2018 when he competes at the Novuna London Athletics Meet on Saturday 18 July 2026.

A two-time Olympic gold medallist, the dominant 26-year-old has been crowned world champion six times at senior level (three times outdoors, three times indoors), won a hattrick of European titles and won five successive Diamond league titles from 2021-2025 inclusive.

He has broken the world record 14 times since 2020, most recently clearing a gravity-defying 6.30m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo where he successfully defended his global title.

Duplantis competed in the London Stadium for the first time as a 17-year-old, finishing ninth at the 2017 World Athletics Championships. He returned one year later, finishing third in the ‘Anniversary Games’ behind the USA’s Sam Kendricks and Renaud Lavillenie of France. His only other UK Diamond League appearance came in Gateshead in 2021 where he finished second to Kendricks.

“It’s been too long since I last competed in London,” said the 2025 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year who will target Lavillenie’s meeting record of 6.03m which has stood since 2015.

“My first ever World Championships was at the Olympic Stadium in 2017 and although I was still pretty inexperienced, I could appreciate the incredible atmosphere, so it means a lot to me to go back. There’s just something about that place. Every year I see athletes raise their game in the London Diamond League so I’m excited to get out there and use that crowd noise to my advantage. I’ve never won in London, so obviously that’s the main goal.”

The Novuna London Athletics Meet – the world’s biggest one-day athletics event – is the eleventh meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League. The series comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field across four different continents and begins in Doha on 8 May. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels (4-5 September).

To mark the announcement, a new batch of tickets from £26 for adults and £5 for under 16’s will be released in the area that offers the very best view of all the pole vault action.

These tickets will go on sale at 10am on Wednesday 3 December. Fans are encouraged to register for British Athletics email updates to get an alert once they are available.
