UK Athletics Championships memories - Jade Lally: My first UK Championship title

Seven-time British gold medallist Jade Lally will be looking to continue her dominance in the discus event at the Muller UK Athletics Championships in Manchester on the weekend of June 24-26.

Following a 61.78m throw in Australia in January and two seventh-place finishes in the Birmingham and Eugene Diamond League events, Lally (Shaftesbury Barnett, Zane Duquemin) reflected on her first national victory back in 2010:

My first UK outdoor victory…

I remember winning my first British champs in Birmingham – it was a hot, sunny day and I was in PB shape. I beat my good friend (and idol) Phillippa Roles, who sadly has since passed away.

I won and it was a PB (I think!) of 57m – I remember being really happy!

The Importance of the Championships…

I have always valued our nationals and have only missed it in 2019 for the birth of my first child in the July, and I missed it in 2021 because I immigrated to Australia and couldn’t financially afford to get back to the UK, Covid also made it near impossible.

Unfortunately, in terms of championships selection, nothing came of winning my first national championships but it gave me self satisfaction and pride.

Goals for Manchester…

This year I will be going for my eighth title and will look to confirm my place on the European and World Championship team!
