UK Athletics Championships Memories - Beth Dobbin: My first UK Championship title

2018 200m champion, Beth Dobbin will be chasing the UK half lap outdoor title again at the Muller UK Athletics Championships in Manchester on the weekend of June 24-26.

Olympic and world semi finalist, Dobbin (Edinburgh AC, Leon Baptiste) recorded a 23.04 season’s best in Prague earlier this month and finished sixth in the Doha Diamond League in May.

And the sprinter reflected on her first national victory back in 2018:

My first UK outdoor victory…

My first win was in Birmingham and it was a very special day for me as I’d never made a GB team before as a junior or senior but three weeks before the champs, I ran under 23-seconds for the first time so went in confident I could win but it was a stacked field and really competitive.

The race was probably the most special moment for me in this sport – I came off the bend well down the field but kept calm and relaxed, coming through late and properly dipped for the line. I was sixth the year before and then suddenly gained selection for Great Britain from this race for the European Championships, which was amazing.

The rest of the season…

I opened up well then ran 22.84 and 22.83 so I did go into the trials with a lot of confidence, and then afterwards, I finished third in the World Cup in the London Olympic stadium and then made the final of the European Championships, it was all so special for me.

The Importance of the Championships…

I’ve always loved the British Champs and I’m used to the rubbish weather being from the north, plus Manchester is nice for my family to get to. Racing in Manchester last year to qualify for the Olympics was obviously special for me.

Goals for Manchester…

To book my spot for a place on the World Championships team – I want to secure my selection and put down a marker. I already have the qualification standard, but I would like to finish in the top two to book my place on the plane to America.
