TOP SEVEN PLACING FOR THOMAS GEORGE AT EUROPEAN 10,000M CUP

Thomas George (coach: Richey Hansen, club: Birchfield Harriers) was the top-placed finisher for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the European 10,000m Cup in Pacé, France on Saturday (3 June).

The men’s race saw USA-based George come through the field well to finish seventh overall in a time of 28:23.06.

On his debut appearance for GB & NI, he started the race strongly as he stayed with the leading pack in the early stages. He went through the halfway point in 14:14.07 and maintained a consistent pace to claim a top 10 finish in the overall standings.

He was backed up by Jack Gray (Mark Vile, Cambridge & Coleridge) who was the second British athlete across the line in a time of 28:38.25, while Matthew Leach (Dena Evans, Bedford & County) was the third and final counter for GB & NI in a time of 28:48.01 for 21st position.

With their placings accumulated, the British trio finished fifth overall in the team standings.

In the women’s race, experienced GB & NI international Abbie Donnelly (Rob Lewis, Lincoln Wellington) was the first Briton in 13th, the time coming in at 33:04.40. Next home for the team was Rebecca Murray (Craig Winrow, Bedford & County) in 34:33.94, while Hannah Irwin sadly did not finish.

Yemaneberhan Crippa (ITA) and Alina Reh (GER) was the winners of the men’s and women’s races respectively.
