Silver for Scott, Bronze for Busfield in Novuna GB&NI Four-Medal Final Day at Europeans

As the weekend of off-road racing concluded in Slovenia, Novuna GB and NI took home four more medals on the final day with the up-and-down races. Nancy Scott (Edinburgh AC) took silver in the senior women’s race, with the team also reaching the podium for bronze. Ewan Busfield (Derby AC, Jethro McGraw) produced a sprint finish to claim bronze in the U20 men’s race, with his teammates helping secure the same placing on the team podium.

Nancy Scott (Edinburgh AC) had a fantastic run in the 13.1 km up-and-down senior women’s race to take silver. She sat in third place at the end of the first shorter lap before climbing strongly on the longer second lap to overtake France’s Nelie Clément and hold on to a narrow lead, finishing in 1:11:07.

After the race, Scott said: “I am really happy with my race, it went surprisingly well. The midday heat and mud on the descent were challenging, so it was a relief to reach the road section into Kamnik. I’ve also enjoyed spectating and witnessing the GB team’s strong performances.”

The women’s team went on to take bronze, with only two points separating the podium positions. Scout Adkin (Ambleside AC, Angela Mudge) put in a strong run to take fourth after running with Scott and Clément for most of the race, crossing the line in 1:11:14. Naomi Lang (Carnethy Hill RC/Glasgow Uni, Lewis Walker) ran 1:18:00 to take 23rd, with Elle Twentyman (Rugby & Northampton) not far behind in 1:20:34 for 27th.

After taking her second team medal of the weekend, Adkin said: “Conditions were tough, it was really hot out there and I worked hard to maintain my fourth position. It’s great to be part of the bronze medal-winning team after winning team gold in the uphill.”

Ewan Busfield (Derby AC, Jethro McGraw), in the 5.7 km U20 race, took the other individual medal of the day, claiming bronze with a sprint finish to secure a podium place in 24:55.

Speaking after his nail-biting finish, Busfield said: “It was very good. The course was steep and hard, but I managed to come home in third.”

Ben Hodson (Stewartry AC, Angela Mudge and Nicky Cruikshank), Lachlan Thomas (Ross County Athletics Club, Sophie Dunnett) and Adam Bentham (Mercia Fell Runners) worked together as a pack throughout the race, remaining strong on the descent and overtaking several runners. Hodson and Thomas finished strongly, taking 12th and 13th in 26:02 and 26:03 respectively, with Bentham just behind in 18th in 26:21. Their efforts were rewarded with a team bronze medal, as they were the only team to have all their athletes finish within the top 20.

Pleased with the team effort, Hodson, just 17 and making his GB debut, said: “I’m really glad we could secure the team bronze medal. Lachlan and I really put a shift in on that sprint finish to secure it. Wearing a GB vest for the first time is a dream come true, and I could not be prouder of my performance today.”

In the U20 women’s race, Isla Pastor (Warriors Pentathlon & Athletics Club, Ronan Kearney) crossed the line first for GB and NI in 31:04 to take ninth, with Constance Jenneson (Buxton AC, Alison Hartopp and Bev Hartigan) 30 seconds behind in 15th. Nancy Corrie (Harmeny AC, Craig Stewart) started strongly and was in a medal position for the first 2.5 km, but after the runner in front took the wrong way where Nancy followed, meaning the 18-year-old finished just outside the top 20 in 22nd with a time of 32:17. Graihagh Turner (Penistone Footpath Runners & AC) finished 36th in 33:39.

Finally, in the men’s up-and-down race, Matthew Knowles (Carnethy Hill RC, Sophie Dunnett) finished 15th in 1:03:48 despite a fall on the descent. Oscar Subuh-Symons (Ambleside AC, Sarah McCormack) was 22nd in 1:04:45, Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers, Matt Seddon) 37th in 1:07:03, and Finn Lydon finished in 1:09:22, giving the team a top ten finish in ninth place.

Saturday featured the senior trail races. In the women’s race, Scarlet Dale (Ambleside AC, Mark Croasdale) remained in the competitive front pack for 29 km before dropping back in the second half, but she finished strongly in 14th in 5:02:28. Eve Pannone (Ambleside AC, David Roche) followed in 19th with 5:06:28, Emily Cowper-Coles (Rotherham Harriers/Dark Peak Fell Runners) was 29th in 5:19:33, and Kirsty Oldham (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) finished 48th in 5:35:35. The women’s team placed fourth overall.

In the men’s race, Luke Grenfell-Shaw (Lonely Goat RC, Lewis Moses) secured eighth place after staying within the top five for much of the race, finishing in 4:12:44. Ben Rothery (Ilkley, Sarah McCormack) was next in 21st in 4:21:58, Alexander Chepelin (Carnethy Hill RC, Sophie Dunnett) finished 27th in 4:25:54, and Andy Symonds finished 33rd in 4:28:03, with the team placing fifth overall.
