SHEARMAN'S HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
As we wind down to the end of the year, we asked British Athletics’ resident photographer Mark Shearman to share his 12 highlights and their photos from the last 12 months.
January
Ready for a bath, the senior men’s race medallists at the South of England Champs in Stanmer Park, Brighton.
February
A close finish at the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham as Chijindu Ujah wins the 60m from Andrew Robertson, Sam Gordon and John Otugade.
March
Birmingham hosted the IAAF World Indoor Championships in March, and this image is from the men’s 3000m. The picture was taken with a 16mm lens that I purchased in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
April
Always good to photograph David Weir, especially when he wins as he is here in a close finish at the London Marathon.
May
Making a splash, Iona Lake on her way to winning the women’s steeplechase at the BMC Grand Prix in Watford.
June
A spectacular fall is always good to photograph. Here Conor Smith and Rory Leonard take a tumble in the U20 men’s 3000m in Bedford, while James Vincent coasts to victory.
July
Kare Adenegan had just broken the world record for the women’s T34 100m at the Muller Anniversary Games in London. On her victory lap she found time to give me a wave and a smile.
August
Here is Holly Bradshaw competing at the Zurich Diamond League Final. This camera angle often presents danger to the photographers as the pole falls towards them.
September
A champagne celebration for Greg Rutherford at the Great North CityGames in Gateshead after the final long jump competition of his illustrious career.
October
Chris Thompson looked pleased as he won the Great South Run in Southsea for the third consecutive time.
November
A backdrop of autumnal colours during the men’s race at the British Athletics Cross Challenge in Milton Keynes at Tear Drop Lakes Park.
December
France’s Jimmy Gressier comes a cropper in the U23 men’s race at the European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg, Holland as he tried to glide to victory on his knees.
