PREVIEW: THE BRITISH ULTRA-RUNNING TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE LAKELAND TRAILS 100KM

This weekend sees the British Ultra-running Trail Championships incorporated into the Lakeland Trails 100km event in Ambleside in the Lake District.

The event acts as the official trial event for the 80km trail race for the World Trail and Mountain Running Championships scheduled for Thailand in November (11-14).

Runners will complete a 100km course with the first two male and female athletes overall, subject to the meeting the criteria outlined in the selection policy, automatically selected for the championships

The event will be held under strict covid protocols with the elite waves starting at one minute past midnight on Saturday 10th July.

One of the leading contenders for the men will be Nick Swinburn (Morpeth), a multiple British mountain running international, tackling his first long trail event.

Experienced ultra-distance and mountain runners, George Foster (Ambleside) and Harry Jones (Mynydd Du), will also pose a threat. Tom Evans, a previous medallist at the World Championship from 2018, has sadly had to withdraw due to injury.

For the women, British ultra-running internationals Meryl Cooper, Jo Meek (Winchester) and Carla Molinaro (Clapham Chasers) head the field as they target the World Trail Championships (80km Course) later this year.
