PRESCOD CLAIMS STUNNING VICTORY IN SHANGHAI

Reece Prescod (coach: Jonas Dodoo) produced a huge upset in a stacked men’s 100m field as he claimed victory by 0.01s in Shanghai.

The finalist from the IAAF World Championships in London last year produced an almighty surge in the closing stages to pip home favourite Bingtian Su (CHN) to victory in 10.04, 0.01 outside his personal best.

Competing alongside him in the torrential rain, defending 100m Diamond League champion and fellow Briton, CJ Ujah (Stuart McMillan), came home fourth in 10.18, missing out on third place by 0.01 to China’s Zhenye Xie.

Speaking after his win, Prescod said: “When I saw the rain tonight I thought, ‘yes’, I train in these conditions all the time in the East Midlands. It suits me.

“My expectations going in were I knew I had it in me (to win) as long as I executed my race. It is definitely the happiest moment in my time on the Diamond League circuit.

“I don’t know what will happen next (in terms of his next competition), I will need to speak to my agent.

“I have great respect for Su, I’ve raced him before and he’s a top competitor. I’ve really enjoyed racing in Shanghai and I’ll be back again next year.”

Andrew Osagie (Mark Rowland) kicked off his Diamond League season with a season’s best 1:46.36 as he finished seventh in the men’s 800m.

A frantic pace set by Bram Som (NED) set the tone for the race as Wycliffe Kinyamal (KEN) took victory from Jonathan Kitilit (KEN) on the line in a meeting record 1:43.91.

Osagie could not keep pace with the duo but held off the late challenge of Rynhardt van Rensburg (RSA) to pick up his first two points of the season.

Highlights from the Shanghai Diamond League are available on BBC Two on Sunday, 13 May from 12:00.
