ONE MONTH TO GO UNTIL THE UK ATHLETICS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

There is exactly one month to go to the 2022 UK Athletics Indoor Championships.

With 26 events – 13 for both men and women – taking place across the two days, the event promises to be a superb weekend of action with many of the nation’s leading athletes trying to win national titles and qualification for the World Indoor Championships.

Teenage talent Ed Faulds (coach: James Wright; club: Rugby & Northampton) is keen to make his mark at 400m. Faulds won European under-20 golds in the 400m and 4x400m last year in Tallinn and has started 2022 in great form by going third on the UK all-time under-20 men’s indoor rankings for 400m with a 46.84 victory at the World Indoor Tour (Silver) event in Manchester on Saturday.

Now he is setting his sights on the UK Athletics Indoor Championships on 26-27 February where selection places for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March will be up for grabs.

“I want to make a statement and hopefully get a World Indoors spot,” he said. “I’m still an under-20 so it would be a big statement from a 19-year-old to win that.”

Faulds only turned 19 on January 1 and he is part of the Nike-supported Olympic Futures Academy. This means that among other things he benefits from regular visits to the high performance centre at Loughborough.

“It’s nice to be a part of it and have support from British Athletics,” he says. “They’re helping me get to where I want to be.”

In addition to Faulds, athletes who have already accepted their invitations to compete include sprint hurdler Andy Pozzi, sprinter Amy Hunt and shot putters Sophie McKinna and Scott Lincoln, among others.

The event was first held in Birmingham in 2007 although this will be the first time it has been held since the 2020 Championships in Glasgow, with the 2021 edition unable to be staged due to Covid-19.

The action will unfold at the Utilita Arena in a city which is set to be a huge focal point for the sport during 2022. In addition to this meeting there is also the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham taking place at the same venue the weekend before on Saturday 19th February, together with the return of the Diamond League at the nearby Alexander Stadium and Commonwealth Games in July and August.
