OLYMPIC, WORLD AND EURO MEDALLISTS LEAD THE WAY IN CONFIRMING BRITISH CHAMPS ATTENDANCE
Olympic, World and European medallists are confirmed to battle it out against the best in the country at the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships on 9-10 February 2019 at the Arena Birmingham, taking place one month today.
With the opportunity to qualify and represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow – another opportunity to compete in front of the boisterous home crowd – the excitement from athletes and fans alike continues to build in anticipation of the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships.
Double World Indoor medallist and Diamond League champion Laura Muir (Coach: Andy Young, Club: Dundee Hawkhill) is among those who have already accepted their place to compete. After dazzling the Birmingham crowd with two medals at the IAAF World Indoor championships last March before European and IAAF Diamond League title heroics, her performances are certainly not to be missed.
Asha Philip (Steve Fudge; Newham & Essex Beagles) will aim to defend her 60m title which would be her fourth successive British Indoor title ahead of looking to retain her European Indoor title, while the also-confirmed hurdles specialist Andrew Pozzi (Santiago Antunez; Stratford-upon-Avon) will hope for the same as Philip as he bids to win both British and European titles this winter.
In field event action, 2016 European long jump silver medallist Jazmin Sawyers (Lance Brauman; City of Stoke) will look to recreate her winning moment from the 2016 edition as she battles for the women’s long jump crown.
With a place at a home Championships in Glasgow up for grabs, the likes of Andrew Butchart (Terrence Mahon; Central AC), Eilidh Doyle (Brian Doyle; Pitreavie), Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall; Dundee Hawkhill), Chris O’Hare (Mahon; Edinburgh) and Lynsey Sharp (Mahon; Edinburgh) will have an added incentive at the event which acts as the trials for the European Indoor Championships.
They’ll be bringing Scottish power in abundance to the West Midlands to make sure they book their place in Glasgow a few weeks later.
Butchart has already declared his wish to win gold in Glasgow but he will have to navigate the domestic opponents to qualify for the biggest event of the indoor season. McColgan, fresh from a maiden European outdoor medal in Berlin, will go into 2019 with confidence, seeking to hit the same highs early in the year alongside securing further podium spots on both the domestic and international stages.
Whenever Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake; Tonbrige) is in town, there is a chance he will be re-writing the record books in the walks at the British Champs. The multi-national record holder and has lowered those British marks at the Championships in recent years, but what will he deliver in 2019?
