OLIVIA BREEN AND DAN PEMBROKE VOTED AS PARA ATHLETICS TEAM CAPTAINS FOR PARIS 2024
Olivia Breen (coach: Aston Moore, club: City of Portsmouth) and Dan Pembroke (John Trower, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) have been named the captains for the ParalympicsGB Athletics squad at the Paris 2024 Games.
The pair were voted as women’s and men’s captains following a vote amongst the athletics team and delivered their speeches on Monday afternoon.
Pembroke, the reigning Paralympic F13 javelin champion, goes into his second Games with world title number two to his name from this year’s Championships in Kobe.
After receiving the honour, he said: “It was so unexpected to be voted in as one of the captains. I only joined the team just over three years ago, so I didn’t think I would ever be team captain. Here I am, feeling so included, and I am so proud of the team I am representing.
“In my speech I was trying to say whether it is you first Paralympic Games or your seventh, you need to take every moment as it comes and try and be present as much as you can. For me, in Tokyo, the time just flashed by, I really should have taken note of things that were happening and take those memories with me.
“I wanted to wish the team the best with their successes and enjoy the whole thing.”
Breen has competed at every Games since London 2012 where she won her first medal, and she secured bronze in the T38 long jump in Tokyo three years ago. After speaking to her teammates, she said:
“It is such a huge honour, I was just like ‘wow, this is incredible’. I am very proud to be a team captain alongside Dan, and we cannot wait to see how the team get on.
“I am really excited to be the captain. I wanted to get across that the team can come to me with any questions. This is my fourth Paralympic Games, so I have a lot of experience.
“I cannot wait to get out and compete now. I am in a really good place both mentally and physically, so I am really excited.”
