GB & NI TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR THE LONG TRAIL EVENT FOR THE 2025 WORLD CHAMPS
Seven athletes have been selected to represent the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland team (GB & NI) in the Long Trail discipline at the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain in September 2025.
The team for these Championships has been selected with the aim of achieving a top 10 individual finish or a top five team ranking.
The winner of the trial event, the 14 Peaks Ultra in North Wales, was Paddy Buckley Round record holder Lizzie Richardson (club:Highland Hill Runners, coach:Russell Bentley) and she is the sole female in the team to represent GB & NI, making her senior international debut.
There is an excellent mixture of experienced internationals and debutants in the men’s team, with six athletes selected. The Spine Race record holder, Jack Scott (Cannock & Stafford), makes the squad, alongside Hugh Chatfield (Tring ACĀ Doug Stewart), after they finished in the top two at the trial. They will be joined by Alastair Graves (Ochil Hill Runners, Lewis Walker) and Keith Wigley (Swaledale, Doug Stewart), all making their senior international debuts. Andy Symonds (Carnegie/Kendal) and Luke Grenfell-Shaw (HY AC, David Roche) make up the rest of the team that will compete in CanfrancPirineos.
The third edition of this competition will see athletes from around the world compete in Long and Short Trail events, Classic Mountain distance, and Uphill-only events.
The Long Trail race will be 82km with 5700m of ascent and decent. The runners will have to climb La Moleta, descend into the stunning Izas Valley, pass Royo peak, Formigal, and the border of Portalet before crossing into France and running more than 20 kilometres through the French Pyrenees.
