NORRIS AND PAYNE AMONG WINNERS AT UK WINTER LONG THROWS CHAMPIONSHIPS
There were impressive performances by several athletes at the UK Winter Long Throws Championships, held in Loughborough, on Saturday (17).
Jake Norris (coach: Paul Dickenson, club: Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) produced his second best ever distance in the men’s hammer throw. His best of 75.07m saw him claim the gold. Norris’ PB stands at 76.30m.
Craig Murch (Matt Spicer, Birchfield) took silver with a best of 68.22m and Kai Barham (Paul Head, Dartford) third with 68.03m
European U23 medallist Charlotte Payne (Paul Dickenson, Reading) began her 2024 season by winning the senior women’s hammer competition with a throw of 68.91m. She finished ahead of Katie Head (Paul Head, Newham & Essex Beagles) who threw 65.16m for the silver medal.
Greg Thompson (Neville Thompson, Shaftesbury Barnet) triumphed in the men’s discus with a best of 55.74m ahead of George Evans (Colin McCulloch, Shaftesbury Barnet) who recorded a mark of 53.77m on his first throw.
The women’s competition was won by U23 athlete Zara Obamakinwa (Mark Chapman, Blackheath & Bromley) with a best of 52.81m.
A fifth-round throw of 71.42m saw Daniel Bainbridge (Tom Dobbing, Shaftesbury Barnet) take the men’s javelin title as he edged ahead of Ben East (Luke Angell, Team Kennet) who took silver with a mark measured at 70.56m.
U20 athlete Ayesha Jones (Janina Pownall, Marshall Milton Keynes) secured a lifetime best of 49.28m on her way to the women’s javelin title. On her very first throw of the season she got the PB mark and threw two high 48m attempts to follow up her impressive series.
