MARIA LYLE BRINGS A CLOSE TO HER SUPERB CAREER IN THE SPORT

Multiple Paralympic medallist Maria Lyle has announced her retirement from the sport.

Lyle has competed for Great Britain and Northern Ireland since she was 14 years-old, making her debut at the IPC European Championships in 2014 where she won double gold in the women’s T35 100m and 200m.

The two-time Paralympian won five medals across Rio and Tokyo. She was part of the silver-medal winning 4x100m relay team in Rio and won four bronzes in the T35 100m and 200m at both Games.

In an illustrious career, she won three world titles, most recently the double gold at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai. During her decade in the sport, she has won nine world medals altogether, the first coming in 2015 and the most recent two at last year’s worlds in Paris. In addition, eight European titles are also part of the whole host of silverware which she takes away from the sport.

However, one of the most special moments of Lyle’s career was winning silver for Team Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

All at UK Athletics wish Maria all the best in the next chapter of her life and congratulate her on a superb career in the sport.
