MAGUIRE WINS BRONZE IN THRILLING 1500M RACE
Nathan Maguire beat the world champion in a tactical 1500m race to win bronze at the World Para Athletics Championships.
Maguire (Ste Hoskins, Kirkby) won his second-ever world medal and his first in the 1500m this morning in an exciting race at the national stadium. He positioned himself well in third place early on, then with 400m to go, China’s Jin turned up the pace to stretch out the field, with Nathan using his sprint strength in the last 100m to edge out Marcel Hug for third with a time of 2:51.51.
“This is what I have dreamed of my whole career, and to be able to do that in front of my family who have come to watch, not many people in the stadium, but at least I had my team in here. It is always special to do that in front of them to take away a 1500m bronze medal – I have never done that before. It is really exciting.” He beamed.
Touching on the tactics of the race he said; “I planned to get out fast and then found myself in first and thought I don’t want to be here, so sat off a little bit and got into second/third and stayed here. Marcel and Jin were attacking each other a bit, so I thought I’d stay here and go round you in a bit.”
After a delay due to bad weather, Sophie Hahn (Joe McDonnell, Charnwood) finished in the T38 200m in a time of 27.11, her second final of the championships. In a race where the world record was broken, Colombian Palomeque won her third medal, going sub-26 seconds.
“That was a very fast race, showing how the sport is moving, which is good. I am disappointed in myself but it has been a long season. As I said from the start, making it to two finals, I couldn’t be happier with that.”
Hannah Taunton (Charlotte Fisher, Taunton) rounded off the evening, finishing fourth in the world in the T20 1500m in 4:42.95, where Da Silva Barros from Brazil smashed the world record by 4 seconds.
“It was a really amazing experience, I know it was different to Paris. This year I really enjoyed it as last year I had a very tough year last year. I had a grade one hamstring injury which I was off for two months. Now I am back nice and strong.”
