GB & NI U20 TEAM WIN DNA INDOOR MATCH IN MADRID

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland U20 team were triumphant at the Dynamic New Athletics (DNA) Indoor Match in Madrid, Spain today [Wednesday 22 February).

It all came down to the final event in The Hunt where GB & NI’s mixed distance relay team ensured they crossed the line first ahead of Czech Republic and Spain.

David Race (Kyle Bennett, Gateshead) led things off on the first leg which was 600m, before Leg 2 (400m) Jessica Astill (Paul Keeble, Stevenage & North Herts) picked up the baton. (Leg 3 200m) Dean Patterson (David Watson, Glasgow Sch of Sport) and (Leg 4 800m) Ava Lloyd (Trevor Painter, Wigan & District) completed the task at hand to give GB & NI the team victory at this meeting.

However, earlier in the day there had been several notable performances to put GB & NI in pole position to take the win.

Daniel Goriola (John Gates, Bexley) improved his 60m hurdles personal best to 7.69 as he finished second in his race to Spain’s Daniel Castilla.

There were two additional victories for the British team and both came in the relays.

The mixed 4x400m relay outfit started the event off in fine style as they sealed full points in the opening event.

The quartet of Thomas Hockley (Katy Odell, Harrow), Ashley Nemits (Trevor Painter, Wigan & District), Etty Sisson (Grant Barker, Charnwood) and Onyeka Okoh (Julie Benterman, Chelmsford) led the team to a comfortable win in a time of 3:26.19.

In the unique 2x2x200m relay, Samael Lunt (Andrew Fraser, Wirral) and Sophie Walton (Trevor Williams, Horwich) clocked 1:43.29 to take a narrow victory ahead of Czech Republic with just 0.01 separating them on the line.
