GB & NI SQUAD SET FOR 2024 EUROPEAN THROWING CUP

A contingent of Great Britain and Northern Ireland athletes have been selected for the upcoming European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal on 9-10 March 2024.

The team will see Amelia Campbell (coach: Zane Duquemin, club: Thames Valley) and Scott Lincoln (Paul Wilson, City of York) in action, fresh from competing at this week’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Both will compete in the shot put competitions.

Lincoln has a strong history in the event after winning bronze at the 2021 edition in Croatia, while Campbell will be joined by Serena Vincent (Mike Winch, City of Portsmouth) in the women’s event. Vincent won the U23 category last year – the first time a Briton has achieved the feat – and followed that up with silver at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo, Finland last summer.

Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow), who was victorious at the UK Winter Long Throws event earlier this month, will represent GB & NI in the hammer. He will be pulling on the vest for the first time since finishing seventh at the European Team Championships during the 2023 season. Katie Head (Paul Head, Newham and Essex Beagles) will compete in the women’s event.

Ben East (Luke Angell, Team Kennet) – 2023 UK champion – goes in the men’s javelin (U23), while Nick Percy (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) and Zara Obamakinwa (Mark Chapman, Blackheath & Bromley) will contest the discus.

Ryan Spencer-Jones, Team Leader, said, “This is an important event for our throwers which provides significant experience on the international stage. We have seen some strong results at the event in recent times, and we are pleased to be taking a team with experienced members as well as those continuing their development in the sport. I look forward to seeing how they all perform in Portugal.”
