GB & NI squad announced for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain

UK Athletics can announce the U20, Classic Up-and-Down, and Uphill Mountain athletes who will complete the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GB & NI) squad for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain on 25-28th September.

The 22 athletes selected today complete the team selections, following the announcement of the Long Trail and Short Trail teams earlier this summer.

A team of 37 athletes will represent GB & NI at the third combined Mountain and Trail Running Championships, where athletes from around the world compete in Long Trail, Short Trail, Classic Up-and-Down,  and Uphill events.

The teams for these Championships have been selected with the aim of athletes achieving a top 10 individual finish or a top five team ranking.

The hills of Keswick saw athletes battle it out at the British trials, with the first two athletes to cross the line securing their spot in the team as per the selection policy.

Jacob Adkin crossed the finish line first in the Uphill race, where the course was over 6.4km with 905 metres of ascent, on Friday in a time of 37:44. Finlay Grant came in second just over a minute behind. They will be joined by third and fourth place finishers, Matt Knowles and Oscar Subuh-Symons, for the men’s Uphill team.

Scout Adkin, who is currently leading the 2025 WMRA World Cup standings, will double up in the women’s Uphill and Classic Up-and-Down events, despite suffering a fall in the trials at the weekend. Kirsty Dickson claimed the win in the Uphill with a time of 45:49, securing her spot in the GB & NI team. The next two in the race were Eden O’Dea and Ruth Jones, who will also travel to Spain for the women’s Uphill event.

The Classic Up-and-Down races took place at Whinlatter Forest over a distance of 14km with a 750m climb. In the women’s race, Nancy Scott put in an impressive performance to claim the win in a time of 69:07. Second and third placers, Katherine Maltby and Sara Willhoit, along with Scout Adkin, will make up the women’s Classic Up- and- Down team at the World Championships.

In the men’s Classic Up-and-Down race, Jacob Adkin came in a close second to earn his place in a second event. He will be joined in the Classic Up-and-Down team by Felix McGrath, Andrew Douglas and Lawrence McCourt.

In the Junior Up-and-Down races at the trials, it was a triumphant Scottish double with Thomas Hilton and Isla Patterson taking the victories. They will make up the U20 team alongside Hania Czebreszuk, Amelie Lane, and Jessica Taylor in the women’s team, and Ewan Busfield, Jack Sanderson, and Rowan Taylor in the men’s team.
