FitzGerald and Wilson named as captains for European Athletics U20 Championships

European U20 record holder Innes FitzGerald and World U20 medallist Teddy Wilson will captain the Novuna Great Britain & Northern Ireland U20 team at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland this week (7-11 August).

FitzGerald (coach: Gavin Pavey, coach: Exeter) will double up in both the 3000m and 5000m in Tampere, having recently broken Zola Budd’s 40-year record over the latter distance at the Novuna London Athletics Meet last month.

That was one of a number of international competitions the 19-year-old has competed in as part of her breakout season at senior level, with FitzGerald also competing at the Stockholm Diamond League and the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn.

Wilson (Marvin Rowe, Shaftesbury Barnet) goes in the 100m and the 4x100m relay, having set a new personal best of 10.24 in the former at the recent England Athletics Championships.

The 18-year-old was on the anchor leg as Great Britain won 4x100m silver at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima last year.

Team leader Darren Ritchie said: “Both Innes and Teddy have been selected for this prestigious role as a reflection of their professionalism and performances this year.

“They both have previous championships experience and have consistently led by example in helping to support the entire team in Tampere.”

Action gets underway on Thursday 7 August and will be streamed live on Eurovision Sport.
