CORBISHLEY BATTLES TO 23RD IN MEN’S 35KM AT EUROPEAN RACE WALKING TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cameron Corbishley (Andi Drake, Medway and Maidstone AC) produced a determined display to place 23rd in the men’s 35km at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady, Czechia.

The 26-year-old clocked 2:36:06 to secure valuable World Athletics Ranking points as he continues his push towards qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

After passing the 10km mark in 43:32, Corbishley was well placed in 18th, but a mid-race toilet stop just before 20km disrupted his rhythm, dropping him back to 23rd at the halfway point (1:28:44). Regrouping well, he picked up the pace to go through 25km in 1:49:57, but a second red card forced him to ease off slightly over the closing stages.

In a high-quality field, the race was won by Italy’s Francesco Fortunato in a time of 2:25:43.

Reflecting on his performance, Corbishley said:
“It was an up and down race today. I was going well in a pack before the toilet stop. I then got going and felt really comfortable, but the second red card meant I had to back off slightly.”
