BRITISH TEAM SET FOR PRESTIGIOUS HALLE THROWS

Ten of Great Britain & Northern Ireland’s best throwers are set to pull on the British vest at the prestigious Halle Throws International in Germany this weekend.

With the senior and age-group competitions split across two days, eight British athletes will compete on Saturday and two on Sunday as they bid to test themselves against the best in the world.

Commonwealth champion Nick Miller (club: Border; coach: Tore Gustafsson) – who opened his season with victory at the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge in Brazil last month – leads those in action on Saturday, returning to Halle for the second year running having finished third in 2018.

Joining him on day one, British indoor champion Sophie McKinna (Great Yarmouth; Mike Winch) will once again take to the shot put circle in Germany after a great start to 2019 that has seen her hit the qualification standard for the IAAF World Championships in Doha later this year. She has fond memories of Halle, setting a still-standing British junior record in 2013.

Taylor Campbell (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow; John Pearson) makes the step up to the senior hammer competition following on from a third himself as an under-23 last year while reigning indoor and outdoor British shot put champion Scott Lincoln (City of York; Paul Wilson) completes the four seniors in action on Saturday.

Welsh pair James Tomlinson (Pembrokeshire; Paul Jensen) in the discus and Sarah Omoregie (Cardiff; Gareth Lease) in the shot put both return for the under-20 competition and compete on Saturday. Omoregie’s outing follows swiftly on from her achieving the qualifying standard for the European Under-20 Championships with a personal best 15.37m at the Loughborough International.

Charlotte Payne (Newbury) – who will make her British debut – and Charlotte Williams (Blackburn; Michael Hitchon) have both been chosen for the under-20 hammer on Saturday having both achieved the European Under-20 Championship qualifying standard this year.

On Sunday, javelin thrower Harry Hughes (Newham & Essex Beagles; Mark Roberson), who was also in career best form at the Loughborough International, becoming the first Brit to throw over 80m in seven years with his 80.32m personal best, will compete in the under-23 event.

Discus thrower George Armstrong (Newham & Essex Beagles; Zane Duquemin) joins Hughes on day two having broken the 60m barrier for the first time in his career last month, will also line up in the under-23 event.
