2024-25 OLYMPIC FUTURES PROGRAMME ATHLETES ANNOUNCED
UK Athletics has announced a cohort of 38 athletes on the Olympic Futures Programme for 2024/25.
The Programme – which is supported by Nike and delivered in partnership with the Home Country Athletics Federations – is focused on supporting athletes and coaches who have demonstrated the potential to succeed at future Olympic Games.
Through a series of camps and experiences, and with the support of dedicated staff, the Programme provides opportunities for athletes to develop the skills and abilities required for international senior success and forms part of the pathway towards the World Class Programme (WCP).
Among those on the Futures Programme for 2024/25 are Charlie Carvell (Stewart Marshall, Telford AC) who earned his first senior international vest at the 2024 European Athletics Championships. Carvell, who is retained from the 2023/24 intake, was selected to represent Team GB at the Olympic Games in Paris but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.
Mia McIntosh (Jake Awe, Harrow), Nia Wedderburn-Goodison (Ryan Freckleton, Harrow) and Teddy Wilson (Marvin Rowe, Shaftesbury Barnet) – who all represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GB & NI) at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru – also remain on the programme.
13 athletes join the Programme for the first time including World U20 Championships medallists Ed Bird (Mark Pauley, Poole AC), Charlotte Henrich (Nigel Stickings, Invicta East Kent) and Jake Odey-Jordan (Victor Blackett), in addition to European U20 cross country champion Innes Fitzgerald (Gavin Pavey, Exeter Harriers).
2023/24 Futures graduates Sam Reardon (Nigel Stickings, Blackheath & Bromley), double Olympic relay bronze medallist in the 4 x 400m and mixed 4 x 400m; Amy Hunt (Marco Airale, Charnwood), Olympic relay silver medallist and European 4 x 100m relay champion; Megan Keith (Ross Cairns, Inverness), European Championships 10,000m bronze medallist; and Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow), European hammer finalist, step up to the WCP for 2024/25 and have set the bar high for this year’s selected athletes.
Previous Futures graduates who have excelled in 2024 include Olympic and European 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson (Trevor Painter, Leigh); world indoor pole vault champion and European bronze medallist Molly Caudery (Scott Simpson, Thames Valley); Olympic 4 x 400m relay bronze medallist and European 400m silver medallist Charlie Dobson (Leon Baptiste, Colchester); Olympic 4 x 400m and mixed 4 x 400m relay bronze medallist Amber Anning (Chris Johnson, Brighton & Hove); Olympic 4 x 400m relay bronze medallist Yemi Mary John (Alan James, Woodford Green Essex Ladies); Olympic 4 x 100m relay bronze medallist Jeremiah Azu (Marco Airele, Cardiff); and European 5000m silver medallist George Mills (Thomas Dreißigacker, Brighton Phoenix).
UKA Head of Performance Pathways, Dan Wagner said: “It’s been great to see the progress and development of current and former Futures athletes and their coaches in recent years and we look forward to tracking this year’s cohort.
“The Futures Programme focuses on engaging and understanding athletes and coaches and supporting them on their unique journeys throughout different stages of their development, whether that’s achieving a personal best, a GB & NI junior debut, or stepping up to the senior ranks.
“While some have previously experienced the support of the Olympic World Class Programme, we understand that circumstances change and challenges happen. The aim for those athletes is obviously to progress back through the senior ranks. That’s why it’s fundamental for us to understand each athlete’s set up and plan, so that we can offer the tailored support they need to achieve their goals.”
