2023 IN REVIEW: SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER
World Road Running Championships, Riga
Callum Elson secured Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s first medal at the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships as he took the silver medal in the men’s mile race, while the women’s half marathon quartet took team bronze in the penultimate event of the programme in Riga, Latvia.
Calli Thackery (Hallamshire) ensured seventh place in an excellent PB of 1:08:56, while Sam Harrison (Vince Wilson, Charnwood) was ninth in 1:09:26. Clara Evans (Pontypridd) impressed as she came through in 22nd in a time of 1:10:53, and Abbie Donnelly (Rob Lewis, Lincoln Wellington) was 25th across the line in 1:11:08.

Eugene Diamond League Final – Keely breaks national record
Keely Hodgkinson revised her national record to 1:55.19 – from 1:55.77 which was set at the Paris Diamond League earlier in the year – as she finished second to Athing Mu in the season finale over 800m, but won the Diamond League title overall.
The Big Half
Jack Rowe (coach: Tim Eglen, club: Aldershot Farnham and District) and Calli Thackery (Hallamshire) were crowned UK half marathon champions at The Big Half in London, while Sammi Kinghorn (Rodger Harkins, Red Star) and David Weir (Jenny Archer, Weir Archer Academy) also took victories in the women’s and men’s wheelchair races respectively in highly entertaining races.

UK Road 5km and One Mile Road Championships
Scott Beattie (coach: Mike Bateman, club: Morpeth), Callum Elson (Cambridge and Coleridge) and Verity Ockenden (Swansea) all secured UK titles at the inaugural UK 5km and One Mile Road Championships held at the Quayside in Newcastle / Gateshead.
