Norris and Oduwaiye lead successful Novuna GB&NI team in Halplus Werfertage Throws Meet

Novuna GB & NI’s throws team enjoyed a successful weekend of development and podium finishes in Halle, Germany, with Jake Norris (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, Nick Ridgeon) and Funmi Oduwaiye (Cardiff Athletics, Josh Clark) taking top honours in their respective events.

Three-time national hammer throw champion and team captain Norris claimed the first British victory of the day, throwing 77.76m on his second attempt to overtake Merlin Hummel’s early lead; a significant improvement on his seventh‑place finish last year.

Aled Davies (Cardiff Athletics) competed in two events: the men’s Group B discus and the Shot Put B competition. He threw 49.57m for ninth in the discus but registered three fouls in the shot put.

After retaining her Novuna UK Athletics Indoor Championship title earlier this year, Serena Vincent (City of Portsmouth, Mike Winch) threw 17.51m on her penultimate attempt to finish fifth in the women’s shot put, securing Commonwealth Games standard in the process. In the women’s hammer, Charlotte Payne (Newbury AC, Ian Payne) unfortunately recorded three no‑throws.

In the mixed shot put, Funmi Oduwaiye opened her weekend with victory thanks to a throw of 11.82m, with Anna Nicholson (Gateshead, Richard Kaufman) placing third with 8.94m. Oduwaiye then added a second top spot in the mixed discus, throwing 35.75m, while fellow Brit Bree Cronin (Cardiff Athletics, Josh Clark) placing second with 35.08m. Both athletes produced their best marks in the opening round.

Following a strong showing at the U20 Championships, Jabez Berry (Halesowen, Steve Pearson) stepped up to the U23 hammer, throwing 66.07m to finish fifth. World Para Athletics Championships medallist Mike Jenkins (Swansea Harriers, Ryan Spencer‑Jones) claimed second place in the U23 discus with 57.54m.

On her Novuna GB & NI debut, Amy Kennedy (Cumbernauld AAC, Alison Grey / Ryan McAllister) threw 14.73m on her final attempt to place eighth in the women’s U23 shot put. In the U23 javelin, Sophie Hamilton (Harrow AC / Loughborough Students, John Trower) threw 49.59m to finish fifth.

Elsewherw In the javelin, Ben East joined the coveted 80m club, becoming only the 12th British man in history to surpass the distance. His third-round throw of 80.05m secured him the bronze medal. UK Athletics Shot Put Champion Scott Lincoln also attending, winning the Men’s Shot Put with a throw of 20.42 to open his outdoor season.
