Lloyd Cowan Bursary

It is just over a year since the much-loved athletics coach Lloyd Cowan died from Covid aged just 58 and since then the Lloyd Cowan Bursary has been set up in his memory to award grants to young athletes and coaches.

Lloyd believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and the Bursary is keen to maintain that ethos as it distributes grants of up to £500 once a year, both to qualified coaches and to unfunded athletes, aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics.

As an athlete, Lloyd was one of Britain’s leading hurdlers but it was as a coach that he really made a name for himself, guiding Christine Ohuruogu to world and Olympic titles and Andy Turner to European and Commonwealth crowns, whereas in addition he helped his son Dwayne become one of Britain’s top 400m runners.

Christine says: “Lloyd once told me that ‘everyone has a dream,’ and he aimed to support athletes and coaches to achieve their goals, however, big or small. He was always helping build the future of athletics.

“This bursary recognises, encourages and support athletes and coaches who dream of being better versions of themselves through athletics.

“I am so proud. This is a fitting legacy for Lloyd, a phenomenal man and coach who lived his life, inspiring young people to thrive.”
