Fresh from winning 200m gold, 100m silver and 4x100m relay silver at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, British sprint star Dina Asher-Smith (GBR, coach: John Blackie, club: Blackheath & Bromley) has been confirmed to compete at the Müller Anniversary Games at the London Stadium, which takes place on Saturday 4 July and Sunday 5 July 2020.

The world champion and four-time European gold medallist will race in front of a home crowd at the London Stadium for the final time before going for a first solo Olympic sprint title at Tokyo 2020.

Having confirmed her status as one of the very best in the world with 200m gold and 100m silver in Doha, Asher-Smith will take on a world class field at the IAAF Diamond League event in London, where British fans will get a chance to give their heroes a rousing send-off before they board the plane for Japan.

Asher-Smith has solidified her status as a national treasure in recent months with fine performances at the IAAF World Championships. She landed herself a nomination for Women’s European Athlete of the Year at the European Athletics Golden Track Awards, while she is sure to be one of the front runners for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019.

The news follows the recent announcement that Asher-Smith’s British team-mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Bertrand Valcin, Liverpool Harriers), who won heptathlon gold at the IAAF World Championships, will also compete at the Müller Anniversary Games, along with the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow (15 February) and Müller Grand Prix Gateshead (16 August).

Speaking on racing at the Müller Anniversary Games, Asher-Smith said:

“I’ve always been vocal about my love of competing in front of a home crowd, so to finish my Olympic preparations by competing at the London Stadium will be special and truly is the best send-off I could ask for.

“2019 has been a whirlwind of a year – the best of my career so far. I hope 2020 can be even better, and to put in a great performance at the Müller Anniversary Games would be a huge boost for me ahead of Tokyo.

“I know from experience that the fields assembled for the Müller Anniversary Games are world class across the board, so I know full well that I’ll be stepping out against the best women in the world when it comes to July 2020.”

Major Events Director for British Athletics, Cherry Alexander OBE said:

“It is fantastic to confirm Dina’s participation at the Müller Anniversary Games. She truly is a superstar of our sport and she is an inspiration to so many young athletes.

“The London Stadium continually attracts the best track and field athletes in the world. Dina is absolutely in that company and there will be plenty more who will join her.”

The Müller Anniversary Games is the 10th stop on the 2020 IAAF Diamond League calendar, which also features Gateshead’s Müller Grand Prix on 16 August.
