STRONG BRITISH TEAM FOR LOUGHBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL WITH EYES ON WORLD AND EUROPEAN U20S

A strong British U20 team has been announced today for the Loughborough International which is taking place on Sunday 23 May.

With both the European and World Athletics U20 Championships taking place this summer, the competition provides an excellent opportunity for athletes to gain valuable experience in a competitive environment in the prestigious British vest.

In the women’s hammer, Charlotte Payne (coach: Paul Dickenson, club: Reading AC) has been selected having already secured the world and European U20 standards. Payne, who is part of the British Athletics Futures Academy Programme, will be hoping to build on her seventh place at the European U20 Championships in 2019. Last year she improved her personal best to 63.92m at the Müller British Athletics Championships.

16-year-old Charlie Carvell (Stuart Hamilton, Telford AC) will be looking to build on his terrific start to 2021 in the 400m. He recorded an outstanding time of 46.64 at the BMC Grand Prix in Manchester earlier this month which was his second sub-47s time this season and was well inside the European U20 standard of 47.50.

Also on the track, another 16-year-old, Success Eduan (Anita Richardson, Sale Harriers Manchester), is selected for the women’s 100m and 4x100m relay. Last year she set a personal best of 11.80 and has followed that up with a time of 11.87 earlier this month.

Henry McLuckie (Geoff Watkin, Shaftesbury Harriers) has already secured the world U20 qualifying time for the 1500m and at the BMC meeting last week he also secured the European standard for the 5000m, so he is in good form going into Loughborough over the shorter 1500m distance.

In the high jump, 2020 British Championships bronze medallist Sam Brereton (Fuzz Caan, Birchfield Harriers) jumped a personal best of 2.17m last month just above the world junior standard of 2.16m.

Trevor Painter, Team Leader, “I am delighted we have been able to select such a strong team as this is an important event for the athletes to gain that competition experience ahead of the international championships. With the pandemic limiting events and coaching opportunities it will be fantastic to see the team in action at the weekend and I am confident we can put on a great show and all build on the experience.”

The Loughborough International is an key competition opportunity in the British Athletics Olympic Performance Pathway which aims to provide opportunities to prepare, confirm and support promising young athletes on their journey towards future Olympic success.

The event, which gets underway at 11:00am on Sunday, will see teams from Wales, Scotland and Loughborough Students also fielding squads with guests also competing in the individual and relay races.
