Preview: Brits set for inaugural World Para Athletics Junior Championships

14 British athletes will compete at the inaugural World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland starting on Thursday through to Sunday.

The championship offers an opportunity for developing athletes who are on the pathway towards individual medal success at a future senior world championships or Paralympic Games.

On Thursday, the championships will get underway with plenty of British interest to kick off proceedings. Sheffield & Dearne’s Jayden Saberton (Lee Walker) will be the first Briton on track in the T37 200m in the U18 category, looking to revise his personal best of 25.84 set indoors back in 2016.

Team Bath’s Daphne Schrager (Alan Richardson / Rob Ellchuk) leads the line in the T35 200m whilst Northern Ireland’s Eve Dann (Roger Sexton) goes in the T36 equivalent in the U18s event.

Two other U18s are involved on the track on day one including Simran Kaur (Nick Harris) who makes her maiden British appearance in the T46 200m whilst Eden Rainbow-Cooper (Jenny Archer) begins a busy schedule with the 200m in the T54 class with three events to follow afterwards.

The long jump pit will be keenly watched by the British contingent as two U18s compete for world junior glory. Peterborough’s Karim Chan (Femi Akinsanya) has been close to his lifetime best so far in 2017 with a 6.04m jump, but will be hoping to get near to his best of 6.14m this week. Esme O’Connell (Ian Roberts) goes in the women’s equivalent; the Dacorum and Tring athlete just one centimetre behind her best ever mark so far in 2017.

U20 athletes featuring on day one include Amar Aichoun (Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun) in the T38 200m, Amy Carr (Rick Betts) goes in the T37 200m with Jack Agnew (Heather Ardis), beginning his campaign which includes five separate events, taking on the one-lap distance in the T54 race.
