FitzGerald sets championship record en route to second gold

Innes FitzGerald set a new championship record en route to her second gold medal of the European Under-20 Championships, as she added the 3000m title to her 5000m crown earned earlier in the week

FitzGerald (Gavin Pavey, Exeter) once again took the race out from the front and completed another solo effort to finish in 8:46.39 on the final day of action in Tampere, Finland.

“It was a tough ask to do both, the 5000m and the 3000m are hard races so I am really pleased to come away with both titles,” she said.

“The aim was to win the 5000m comfortably and then go out and see what I could do in the 3000m.

“I am really pleased to come away with the championship record running a pretty decent solo race.”

Isla McGowan (Ros Kelling, Banbury) finished fifth with a new personal best of 9:14.55, while Zoe Gilbody  (Sarah Benson, Telford AC) came home 12th in 9:30.98.

There were also two silvers in the field as Otis Poole (Joy Bray, Yate) and Thea Brown (Ashley Bryant, Sale Harriers Manchester) took to the podium in the high jump and long jump respectively.

Poole triumphed in a tight competition that saw a number of athletes fail at 2.16m, before Poole produced a third attempt clearance at 2.19m to guarantee at least a silver medal.

Elijah Pasquier of France ultimately pulled clear to gold with 2.25m but Poole was left thrilled with his performance.

“I came into it with an open mind,” he said. “As the competition has gone through, I was clearing first time and working my way up with the bar.

“I was quite nervous at 2.16m. There were six people and I was trying to work it out in my head if I had a chance.”

Brown then produced a personal best jump of 6.44m in the long jump to clinch her third age-group European medal.

Daisy Snell (Guy Spencer, Blackheath & Bromley) finished ninth with a best jump of 6.05m.

“The feeling is really overwhelming,” she said. “After four injuries, I didn’t even know if I was going to be here. You hope but to get a silver medal is an absolutely amazing feeling.”

The women’s 4x100m relay also earned silver, as Nell Desir (Lisa Waddon, Cardiff Archers), Lucy Tallon (Nigel Stickings, Tonbridge), Kaya Slater (Roddy Slater, Reading AC), and Mabel Akande (Denise Timmins, Lincoln Wellington) got the baton round in 43.98s.

The men’s 4x100m team were unable to get the baton round.

Toby Wright (Steve Shaw, Taunton) narrowly missed out on the podium in the men’s 110m hurdles, finishing fourth in a personal best 13.35s. Charlie Staddon (Julie Alexander, Bristol & West) finished seventh 13.69s.

There was also a personal best for Eden Robinson (Cardiff Archers) in the heptathlon, as she finished two days of competition on 5648 points to finish fifth.

Robinson opened with a personal best of 13.82s in the 100m hurdles before an equal personal best of 1.62m in the high jump.

The 19-year-old picked up from Saturday’s competition with 5.72m in the long jump, before throwing out to 34.79m in the javelin.

She then closed with a strong 800m, finishing in 2:16.59 to seal a new personal best score.

Shaikira King (Wreake & Soar Valley) finished fifth in the women’s 800m after leading out the opening lap, eventually finishing in 2:03.60.

Oliver Patton (Robert Hawkins, Kilbarchan) took 10th in the men’s 1500m, coming home in 3:52.06.

Isabella Turner (Andy Jackson, Dacorum & Tring AC) finished 10th in the pole vault with a best clearance of 3.80m.
