BRITISH ATHLETES SELECTED FOR THE 40KM RACE AT THE WORLD MOUNTAIN AND TRAIL RUNNING CHAMPS
Five athletes have been confirmed on the British team to compete in the 40km trail race at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand following the recent selection race at the Scafell Pike Marathon.
The World Mountain and Trail Running Championships were originally scheduled for November 2021 but have now been moved to February 10-13, 2022 (to be confirmed by 1 November 2021).
At the trials race, Tom Adams (self-coached, Ilkley Harriers) and Andrew Douglas (Sophie Dunnett, Inverclyde) had a close battle throughout the race with Adams pulling away in the final few kilometres. Both athletes have been part of medal-winning GB & NI teams at the shorter mountain running events and now look set to make their mark in the longer trail championships.
Adams and Douglas will be joined by Jon Albon (self-coached, unattached). He won the World Trail Running Championships in 2019 and was fourth in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships later that year. These two championships have now been combined and Albon will be a force to be reckoned with at the inaugural combined event.
The women’s race was also a close-fought affair between Eleanor Davis (Helen Clitheroe, Preston) and Nichola Jackson (self-coached, Keswick) with Davis pulling away in the final section to win by 10 minutes. Davis, a 2.33 marathoner, will make her British team debut, meanwhile, Jackson has previously represented GB&NI at the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships
Further athletes may be added to the 40km team following the selection races for the shorter events on 19 September. See the selection policy for more details.
