NOVUNA GB & NI TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR THE U20 EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

UK Athletics has today announced the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GB & NI) team for the U20 European Championships in Tampere, taking place from 7–10 August.

A squad of 59 athletes has been selected in line with the selection policy, with the aim of these Championships being to maximise a top-eight placing as well as providing key experience for 4x100m runners in preparation for senior championships.

Innes FitzGerald (coach:Gavin Pavey, club:Exeter) will be doubling up, going in the 3000m and 5000m, after her incredible run at the Novuna London Athletics Meet, where she broke the U20 European record in the 5000m in front of a home crowd. Charlotte Henrich (Nigel Stickings, Invicta East Kent) also ran a personal best of 51.95 in front of the same 60,000 in the Olympic Stadium in the domestic 400m race.

Noah Hanson (Tony Jarrett, Newham & Essex Beagles) will race the 110m hurdles and goes in as the man to beat, ranked number one in Europe. The U20 World silver medallist, Jake Odey-Jordan (Victor Blackett, BFT Track Academy) will be eager to add to his U20 world medal from last summer in the men’s 200m.

In both the men’s and women’s 100m, Teddy Wilson (Marvin Rowe, Shaftesbury Barnet)  and Mabel Akande (Denise Timmins, Lincoln Wellington) go in ranked second in Europe. Both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams have run some impressive times this season, pushing for the British Record – ones to watch at these championships!

Lyla Belshaw (David Smith, Colchester) is back in the GB & NI vest after setting a U18 European Athletics Championship record in the 1500m last summer. Shakira King (Wreake & Soar Valley) won the 800m trial, setting a new U20 England Championship record of 2:02.86 at the weekend, going into Finland ranked second in Europe.

Jabez Berry (Steve Pearson, Halesowen) will look to continue his form in the men’s hammer after throwing a new personal best of 74.75m at Mannheim earlier in the season.

After performing a new personal best to win the trials, Eden Robinson (Cardiff Archers) will go in the heptathlon. Whilst fellow heptathlete Isla Pain (Cheltenham) will compete in just one event, the women’s high jump.

Trials for this Championship took place at the Alexander Stadium last weekend at the England Athletics Senior and U20 Championships.
