Following a fantastic year for the Aviva GB&NI team, a host of champions have been nominated for the European Athletics athlete of the year awards.
European gold medallists Dai Greene, Phillips Idowu, Jessica Ennis and double champion Mo Farah are in the running for the highly regarded award based on their performances at the recent Championships in Barcelona Spain, helping GB&NI to their best ever medal tally of 19.
While European Cross Country Champion Hayley Yelling gains a deserved place following her 2009/2010 cross country come-back, which saw her return to the course following a short-lived retirement to win the McCain XC and European trials race in Liverpool last year and go on to win the European event in Dublin in December.
World Junior champions Jodie Williams and Sophie Hitchon have been nominated for the 2010 European Athletics Rising Star Awards presented by Mondo, recognising the future stars of the sport in Europe.
Both youngsters already have impressive credits to their fledgling careers, 100m gold and 200m silver medallist Williams also won the 2009 World Youth double sprint titles at the championships in Bressanone, Italy, while Hitchon set a new national record on her way to the hammer title in Moncton, Canada this summer.
If Williams or Hitchon are lucky enough to take home the prestigious award they will join a host of successful international athletes including GB&NI’s Jessica Ennis (2007) and Stephanie Twell (2008).
Winners will be decided by votes from the general public, media, European Athletics Member Federations and a panel of experts.
The winners of the Awards along with the winners of the European Athlete of the Year Awards presented by Mondo will be invited to receive their awards during the European Athletics Convention in Budapest on Saturday 16 October.
