England Athletics has teamed up with Dame Kelly Holmes for a conference to help coaches of female athletes.
The event focuses on the Female Athlete Triad - this is a combination of three conditions that can be associated with females who are involved in intensive exercise such as competitive athletics -menstrual dysfunction, osteoporosis and disordered eating.
The conference is being held at Loughborough University on Saturday 16 May and has the title “Supporting Female Athletes: what every coach should know about the Female Athlete Triad”. It is also being supported by Dame Kelly’s Aviva-sponsored mentoring initiative ‘On Camp with Kelly’.
England Athletics head of coaching Richard Wheater said: “England Athletics is delighted to be working with The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust alongside On Camp with Kelly to deliver an event which will help to develop coaches’ knowledge and understanding of a crucial subject. As part of our strategy to focus a significant proportion of our resources on coaching and coach development we look forward to a challenging and exciting day of learning. The issues associated with female athletes are often poorly understood and England Athletics is totally committed to pushing forward knowledge in this area.”
Dame Kelly commented on the importance of the subject matter and need for coaches to ensure they have an understanding of it: “It is really important that all coaches working with female athletes are aware of issues relating to the Female Athlete Triad. I am delighted to be working with England Athletics in hosting the Supporting Female Athletes conference which will enable coaches to learn from experts through presentations and most importantly interactive workshops. I am pleased to be contributing to this important coach development opportunity.”
The purpose of the conference will increase coaches’ understanding of the risks associated with the Triad and illustrate how they can work with medical practitioners to support female athletes and recognise and prevent the Triad. Experts who will be presenting at the conference include Michael Dooley, Gynaecologist at the Olympic Medical Institute, UKA Medical Officer Dr Noel Pollock and, by video, Professor Anne Loucks, an American academic specialising in the Female Athlete Triad. Workshop topics include recognising signs and symptoms, nutrition for elite athletes and the role of the coach.
The cost of the conference is £100 per person including lunch and refreshments and it is an accredited optional module for Level 3 and 4 coaching awards.
