Phillips Idowu

Triple jump World Champion Phillips Idowu and GB Basketball Captain Drew Sullivan went head to head this month in a fun packed afternoon of court action.

Phillips, the Lucozade Sport Ambassador went back to his basketball playing roots in an exciting match which saw team Idowu lose by just one point in the 19-18 encounter.

A talented basketball player at school Phillips is an avid supporter of the game, although he’s now better known for his triple jump skills as the European and World Champion he is still hugely competitive on the court.

“I don’t like losing and it was so close, just one point in it.” said Idowu.

“I played basketball when I was 11 until I was 15 but my coach said that basketball wasn’t really right for me and sent me to the track. At first I was disappointed, I’d never been to the track and I didn’t even know what spikes were. I turned up to my first competition in trainers and saw all the athletes in spikes and I thought, hold on a minute their cheating! Now I know it was the right decision because I’m actually good at triple jump.”

With his triple jump career flying high Phillips knows he owes some of his success and style to his basketball background.

“Basketball has helped me on the track, teaching me about my spatial awareness and fitness which is important and a great help when jumping. Basketball has always been a part of my life, it’s who I am and my style is all out basketball from my head and wristbands to my long socks, it’s in me.”

Supported by players from the Essex Pirates Sullivan’s team just edged team Idowu to finish an exciting afternoon and the GB Captain had to compliment his opposite number.

“Phillips was good he got stuck in and you can see that he’s still got those basic skills, I guess once you learn those skills they never go and he still plays so they are fresh in him mind. I’d play a game with him again, his basketball talents are far better than my triple jump!” said Sullivan.
